Magna Carta Music

Voskresenije

Voskresenije (in English: Resurrection) is one of St Petersburg’s finest chamber choirs. The ensemble consists of eight solo voices, including a genuine and remarkable basso profundo - hearing will be believing!

Founded in 1993, their repertoire consists mainly of Russian sacred music and folk music which they perform regularly in their tours of Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, the UK, France and Italy. Their considerable reputation has grown under their conductor, Jurij Maruk, who directs them with consummate skill and artistry.

Voskresenije will make a three-day tour of Ealing, engaging with school and community groups. They will sing excerpts of Vespers by Rachmanivov, a liturgical work which was written out of all Russian text books and reference books by the new government regime of 1917.

VOSKRESENIJE!

FROM RUSSIA - WITH LOVE FOR FREEDOM, HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY!

Voskresenije is a chamber choir from St Petersburg, Russia – 8 real Russian singers directed by Jurij Maruk, their conductor, and visiting the UK in the autumn of 2015. Their style of singing is extraordinary – hearing is believing!

Voskresenije means: Resurrection.

The choir is named after the Christian resurrection of Jesus on Easter Day.

All faiths were banned under the Russian Communist regime from 1917 until 1991. The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union then acknowledged the independence of the former Soviet republics and instead created a Commonwealth of Independent States. People were allowed to take up their old faiths and practice them legally and freely. Some people had kept their faith in secret.

Voskresenije will be visiting Ealing on:

  • Monday 19 October

  • Tuesday 20 October

  • Wednesday 21 October

They will be performing at:

  • Acton Library on Mon 19th Oct 3.30.4.30pm

  • Southall Library on Tues 20 Oct 5.30-6.30pm

  • Ealing Central Library on Wed 21 Oct 6-7.00pm

They will be singing excerpts from Vespers by Rachmaninov which is sung on Easter Day.

They will also be singing:

  • Oh Freedom             Folksong of the American Civil War

  • Magna Carta song    Panufnik

  • Kalinka                      Russian folksong

There are a number of options you can choose from if you want to meet Voskresenije:

  • you can sing WITH them in the performances of Oh Freedom, Magna Carta song and Kalinka at Southall and Ealing Central Libraries (both of them or just one of them). You will have to spend some time to learn the music: all the pieces, two pieces or just one piece. We can help you with that.

  • you can come and listen to one of the performances at Acton Library, Southall Library or Ealing Central Library.

  • you can invite them to come to sing at your school.

Let us know what you would like to do. The activities are all free of charge, funded by the Ward Forums of the London Borough of Ealing, Bubble, Heathrow Communities Together, Ealing Arts & Leisure and a private donation.

Singing with the Russian singers of Voskresenije is a quite unforgettable experience.

We will help you enjoy it and to make the very most of a very rare opportunity.
